The Political Instrument of Poverty

Mahatma Gandhi said: “Poverty is the worst form of violence”. I agree. For every election rigged in Africa, for every politician that has risen through to power, the poverty of the people was the ladder upon which he rose. This is violent. Subtle, but violent. I will explain using Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. This is a theory in psychology that explains human motivation through five levels of human needs. He argues that, like behaviour and natural intelligences, what motivates you is unique to you and is a combination of your natural motivations and your current social status. From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are: •Physiological Needs - including Food, Water, Shelter. •Safety Needs - Security, Order, Law. •Social Needs - Love and Belonging. •Esteem Needs - Achievement, Independence, Prestige. •Self-actualization Needs - Personal Growth, Self-fulfillment and so on. The catch is that needs lower down in the hiera...

Political Parties in Nigeria; Same Team, Different Jerseys.

A political ideology is a set of ideas and beliefs that members of a political party subscribe to that reflects in the form and course of action the state takes under their leadership. The political ideology of any party informs the natural attitude of a party and its members towards every public question. If you study Donald Trump, it could be easy to predict what opinions he holds on certain issues, ranging from immigration issues, security or foreign Trade. You can tell. If you study Vladimir Putin, you could also tell what stand he would take on various political issues. These are men who are driven by ideology, with political parties that subscribe to well defined and distinct ideologies. It is however funny that when we bring it down to Nigeria, the politicians and political parties you find here have no strong ideological leaning whatsoever. They would tell you that they do, but it's superficial at best. In truth, these political parties are bereft of clear ideologic...

Restructure or Burst?

The president of Nigeria appoints the ministers of all sectors in the country and is the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria. He literally has the EFCC, DSS, INEC and other federal bodies under his influence. The President of Nigeria can be both President and Minister of Petroleum in the same government. He can detain and arrest individuals at will, without due process. The president of Nigeria can superintend over the Killing of innocent Nigerians on peaceful protest. He can exclusively appoint his family members and religious henchmen into public offices, which is nepotism in Capital letters. The president of Nigeria can freeze assets of opposition members standing trial at will, without due process. Is the President of Nigeria not a god? What kind of constitution apportions such powers to a single individual? Now, Buhari appoints his niece, Amina Zakari to chair INEC collation committee and Nigerians are wailing already. Truth is, Buhari can go ahead to Appoint ...

The Venezuela Story; Lessons For Nigeria

Take a look at Venezuela Venezuela is probably one of the worst places in the world to live in currently. People are virtually struggling to afford basic things like food, water, medicine - name it. For a nation that is rich in oil, and has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, it's quite unfortunate that this oil has turned out to be more of a curse than a blessing to the country. With a close look we can trace the Venezuelan crisis to oil; perhaps the nation's over reliance on oil revenue. Because of the oil Venezuela has, they didn't bother to produce anything else or develop other sectors of their economy. The economy is totally dependent on oil exports as 95% of government revenue is derived from oil. Venezuela sells oil to other countries, and with the dollars it earns, imports all goods the country needs for sustenance. With the fall in oil prices by 2014, the import-dependent Venezuelan economy suffered a great deal because there was shortage of foreign cu...

RELATIONSHIP 101

The way people behave when dating reveals how they will behave when married. Habits and attitudes established while dating are usually carried into marriage. Don't be deceived. If he cheats on you now, he'd probably cheat when you both get married. It all starts now! Everyone is always so eager to be in a relationship, to be loved by someone else. It's a good thing to be loved and cared for. However, this desperation has led many into wrong and toxic relationships. Do not go into dating because everyone is into it or because someone simply asked you out. Be at rest with yourself that you're ready before you commit to a relationship. And you are really ready for dating when you in a way, "DON'T NEED TO". If you feel you need to date in order to be complete or fulfilled personally, you are not ready for dating. If you feel deficient or incomplete, you will build your entire relationship on that deficiency, because you will keep looking up to the other pers...

Buhari Is Not Good For Democracy In Nigeria

Democracy in Nigeria is having a very difficult time. The Muhammadu Buhari Administration is trying very hard to drench Democracy out of Nigeria. The recent LGA elections held in Kano state was a total sham. Pictures of Underage Voters have been flying around the internet, And if you think this will not be repeated in 2019, you're out of touch with reality. Buhari came into power with the Votes of Children, cows and goats. And those votes will sustain him till 2023. What happened to GEJ was a one time thing. I don't see it happening again. Indeed, Buhari is here to stay. And Buhari is not good for us. The uniqueness and strength in our diversity has been frustrated totally. Below is a list of the recently appointed Court of Appeal Justices 1) Justice P. A. Mahmoud, Benue State 2) Justice F. Ojo, Kwara State  3) Justice I. G. Abundaga Nasarawa State 4) Justice M. B. Idris, Niger State. 5) Justice A. M. Talba, Adamawa State. 6) Justices Kadi M. M. Alkali, Adamawa State. ...

DOES BUHARI DESERVE A SECOND TERM?

DOES BUHARI DESERVE A SECOND TERM? By Ifeanyi Chukwudi Muhammadu Buhari came into power with these and many more mouthwatering promises. Many saw the future, saw Buhari for what he truly is and spoke up, but Many were gullible enough to believe that an 83yr old man was the messiah Nigeria had been waiting for. Three years down the line, Nigeria as a nation has taken hundreds of steps backward on all fronts. It's really pathetic. Take another look at these campaign promises and be the judge yourself. 1. I will reduce fuel price to 45naira per liter. 2. There will be free education at all level. 3. I will pay 23million Nigerians 5,000 monthly. 4. I will increase minimum wage and place every graduate in salary for extra 1 year after their youth service. 5. One free meal (to include fruits) daily, for public primary school pupils. 6. I will revive all our refinery in my first one year in office and build more to produce more for our domestic consumption 7. I will crush Boko ...
